In 1878, 5 Jesuits, 2 teachers and 120 students started classes at Creighton (The Sweet 16). Today, it is one of 28 Jesuit universities in the United States with students.

Creighton University is a private research institution in Omaha, Nebraska, founded by the Society of Jesus. It has a 140-acre campus and enrolls approximately 8,400 undergraduate and graduate students. The university has 9 undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools, including a law school, medical school, dental school, pharmacy school, nursing school, and business school.

The university was founded due to the generosity of Mary Lucretia Creighton, who wanted to build a school in memory of her husband, Edward Creighton. Women were 1st admitted in 1913, and in 1958, the college split into Creighton Preparatory School and Creighton University.

Creighton has 14 NCAA Division I teams competing in 8 sports. The men’s and women’s soccer teams play in the seat Morrison Stadium and have made several appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The volleyball team is also consistently ranked among the best in the country.

In addition to bluejay athletics, Omaha has plenty of other exciting events. The College World Series is held annually at Charles Schwab Field downtown and we have hosted four US Olympic Swimming Trials. You can also catch the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Triple-A Kansas City Royals and the Omaha Lancers USHL hockey team, where future stars can be seen.

2024 March Madness

The Creighton men’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third time in four seasons after a hard-fought 86-73 victory over Oregon in double overtime. In the next round, they will face Tennessee, the top seed in their portion of the bracket. Both teams performed exceptionally well in the first round, winning two games each.

Tennessee, the 2-seed in the Midwest Region, defeated St. Peter’s and Texas to clinch their spot in the Sweet 16. Meanwhile, three-seed Creighton beat Akron and Oregon to advance, thanks to a somewhat easier path to an upset in a game.

The game between Creighton and Tennessee will begin at approximately 10:09 p.m. Friday, March 29. It will be held at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan as part of the 2024 NCAA Tournament, rather than an on-campus venue.
