Singapore Badminton Open 2024: PV Sindhu loses to Carolina Marin in thriller; Tree-Gayatri keeps Indian hope alive

India’s PV Sindhu crashed out in the second round of the Singapore Badminton Open 2024 BWF Super 750 tournament in Kallang on Thursday. Trisa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, meanwhile, advanced to the women’s doubles quarterfinals.

PV Sindhu, the two-time Olympic medallist, defeated world number 3 Carolina Marin of Spain 13-21, 21-11, 22-20 after a three-game thriller in one hour and eight minutes.

This is Sindh’s sixth straight loss against Marin. The Indian badminton player last won the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Open 2018 against his Spanish rival. The two shuttlers famously faced each other in the Rio 2016 Olympic final where Marin had the last laugh.

It was Sindhu, currently 12th in the world badminton rankings, who started Thursday’s competition on a positive note. He asserted his dominance early and took the first game easily. However, world No. 3 Marin regained his focus and won the second game to force a decider.

Despite leading 18-15 at one point, Sindhu lost the third game en route to a comeback thriller in Marin. After the result, Marin now command Sindhu 12-6 in the head-to-head record.

India’s top-ranked men’s singles player HS Prannoy also crashed out of the Singapore Badminton Open in the second round. Prannoy, ranked 10th in the badminton rankings, defeated world number 11 Kenta Nishimoto of Japan 21-13, 14-21, 21-15 in 78 minutes.

Trisa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, however, kept the Indian challenge alive in Singapore after reaching the quarter-finals.

The Indian pair were seeded second and defeated All England champions Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee of the Republic of Korea 21-9, 14-21, 21-15 in 59 minutes.

Trisa-Gayatri, ranked 30th in the world, will face Olympic bronze medalist Kim So Young and South Korea’s Kang Hee Young in the quarterfinals on Friday.
