The 24-year-old righty from the Dominican Republic recently signed a six-year contract extension that includes a club option for an additional year that will keep Bello in a Boston uniform through the 2030 season. Bellow’s pitch mix is drawing comparisons to Logan Webb of the San Francisco Red Sox. Red Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey played a big role in Webb’s development while he was with the Giants, and Boston hopes he can do the same with Bello.

Mariners: Brash (right elbow inflammation) and Santos (right lat strain) leave a big void in a bullpen that has been one of the game’s best over the past three seasons, ranking third on FanGraphs in wins above replacement from 2021-23. And beyond Opening Day, starting pitcher Brian Wu will join them on a 15-day IL to start the year, though his rotation spot doesn’t appear until Monday against Cleveland.
Red Sox: The Red Sox went into spring training with Von Grissom as the starting second baseman. But he had a hamstring problem and then a left groin strain and is likely to be out until the end of April. Mariners: Mitch Haniger crushed a team-high five homers over 35 Cactus League at-bats, looking well off midseason form. Even with outfield depth that allows Servais to play righty/lefty matchups, Haniger is expected to start with his veteran status and anticipated return to Seattle. And Julio Rodriguez, who delayed the start of spring training by a week because of left hand inflammation, ended camp on a high note. Who isn’t, freshman outfielder Luke Reilly went 7-for-40 in Arizona but came on strong of late.
