Emma Radukanu withdraws from Miami Open with back injury

Radukanu was expected to be in first-round action against China’s Wang Xiu on Tuesday as he continues his return to the tournament.

Radukanu crashed out of Indian Wells, losing 6-3 7-5 to Aryna Sabalenka in the third round and is yet to win against a top-10 player on the WTA Tour.

Miami Open includes the top 32 singles and 96-player singles field with first-round byes. The main draw begins on Tuesday.

The former US Open champion fell into contention as she lost in straight sets to world No. 2 Sabalenka, winning back-to-back matches for the first time since reaching the last 16 of the same tournament last year.

Radukanu has been working out with his childhood coach Nick Kavade after returning from an eight-month absence following surgery on both his wrist and ankle.

The 21-year-old, ranked 250th in the world, was due to return to action at the Miami Open after being given a wildcard to play in the 1000 combined tournament.

Radukanu was named in Great Britain’s squad to face France in the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers on April 12-13 but it is now uncertain whether he will participate.

Anne Keothavong has a full strength team with British No.1 Katie Boulter, Harriet Dart and Heather Watson.

The winner of the best-of-five tie will advance to the Billie Jean King Cup finals later this year, with the loser competing in the playoffs.

The title will be played on the same surface at Le Porte Indoor as next week’s tournament in Stuttgart, where Raducanu is likely to play as it is organized by one of his sponsors, Porsche, but his participation remains uncertain.

Last year he lost in the first round while in 2022 he reached the quarterfinals.
