Robinho began his imprisonment in Brazil

Robinho began serving a 9 year prison sentence in his native Brazil on Thursday, more than 10 years after he was accused of raping a woman in Italy.

The 40-year-old left his apartment building in the beach town of Santos outside Sao Paulo in a black police car after losing a bid to remain free pending appeal.

A Brazilian high court ruled Wednesday that Robinho must serve his sentence in his home country as a result of his 2017 rape conviction in Italy.

Judges at the Superior Court of Justice in the Brazilian capital Brasilia voted 9-2 to convict the former Real Madrid, Manchester City and AC Milan striker.

In 2013, Robinho was sentenced to nine years in prison in Italy for gang sexual assault while playing for AC Milan.

Earlier on Thursday, Supreme Court Justice Louise Fox rejected a habeas corpus request that would have allowed the former player to remain free pending appeals. His lawyers are seeking a new trial in Brazil based on national sovereignty.

As required by Brazilian law, Robinho is expected to spend his first hours in custody in a hearing with a judge to discuss the possible illegality of the case that led to his arrest.

Robinho will then be taken away for a punishment, which the authorities have not yet revealed.

Brazil does not extradite citizens, which is why Italy tried to imprison him in his home country.

In March 2023, Robinho surrendered his passport to the Brazilian authorities. Robinho continues to deny any wrongdoing and insists that his sex with the woman in the Milan bar was consensual.

The former footballer said in an interview with TV Record that aired on Sunday that racism was to blame for his conviction in Italy.

Unfortunately it still exists today. Was in 2013, now we are in 2024. The same people who don’t do anything against them. It (racism) is who they are. Punished me,” said Robinho.

Chelsea fans warn owners of ‘irreversible toxicity’

Football news: The Chelsea Supporters Trust (CST) said chief executive Chris Jurasek had failed to address the issues raised in a 1,500-word letter to the club.

Addressing co-controlling owners Todd Bohely and Behdad Eghbali earlier this month, CST sent a letter saying fan opinion was at its lowest since the 1980s and the relationship was on a path of “irreversible toxicity”, not just because of their Premier League. Performance this season but “broken” promises to supporters.

Jurasek today defended Chelsea’s current fan engagement mechanism in a reply that CST later published online – and which included CST chairman Mark McGuigan’s response that “it doesn’t really address the issues we have raised”.

CST initially set out a number of issues that supporters were angry and frustrated about, including a promise to “not hit the supporters’ pockets” which they felt had been “broken” in terms of potential ticket price hikes.

The group criticized “too little communication” with the wider fan base about the promised redevelopment of Stamford Bridge, amid an over-arching sense that a “communication void” is being filled by rumors that “can’t be healthy”.

In response, Jurasek said: “We strive to have regular and strong communication with all our supporters, across all our teams, and aim to develop and improve this connection season-on-season. We welcome ideas from our support group on how to improve this connection.

“Our aim is the same as yours: to ensure a bright and successful future for Chelsea Football Club in football news. To do this, we need to increase the club’s income to bring us on par with our rivals and allow us to compete in the Premier League and Women’s Super League, as good as domestic and European competitions. We already have different ways of doing this and will explore more.”

Football news: But on Wednesday, Meehan responded by saying: “We appreciate the response from Chelsea chief executive Chris Jurasek. However, in our opinion, this does not really address the issue we raised, which was about opening the club to a wider range of supporters to explain and reassure what is a difficult and challenging time for everyone.
