Police confirm arrests amid alleged Man Utd v Liverpool ‘tragedy chant’: Football Live News

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) made the arrest following reports of the alleged “tragedy chant” at Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final clash between Manchester United and Liverpool.

The 4-3 win at Old Trafford was heard to refer indirectly to the Hillsborough disaster.

A GMP spokesman said: “GMP can confirm that an arrest has been made for the chanting tragedy at the Manchester United v Liverpool match this afternoon.

“We all know that fans boo their opponents at football matches, but it’s usually done in good humor and without offense. Today’s events exceeded the limits of acceptance and we will work closely with both clubs to identify anyone responsible for the offending during the event.”

The Football Association (FA) said it would “liaise and support” GMP police and added that it was “determined to stop this behaviour”.

A statement said: Today’s FA Cup match between Manchester United and Liverpool.

“We strongly condemn any offensive, derogatory and discriminatory chants in football stadiums and we are determined to stop this behaviour. This is completely unacceptable and can have a lasting and damaging effect on the people and communities within our game. It must stop, and we support any club and their fans who try to eradicate it from the Terrace.”
