As mega-contracts become more common across the league and payrolls continue to grow, some teams view the annual luxury tax threshold as a mere inconvenience rather than a real barrier to spending.

1. Mets
The Mets had the highest salary in 2023 and were only passed on in the offseason when Juan Soto was traded to the Yankees.
After signing JD Martinez, the Mets are now back at the top of this list.
Despite the financial commitment, New York remains an MLB odds long shot after the 75-87 campaign.
2. The Yankees
Thanks to the addition of Soto in the offseason, the Yankees are among the maximal spenders ahead of the 2024 season.
Soto is one of four players to make at least $31,000,000 this year, joining Aaron Judge ($40,000,000), Gerrit Cole ($36,000,000), and Giancarlo Stanton ($32,000,000).
After missing the postseason last year, the Yankees expectance a large payroll stack will boost their MLB playoff odds in the AL East division.
7. The Dodgers
The Dodgers made the biggest splash in free agency by signing two-way star Shohei Ohtani to a record-setting 10-year, $700 million contract and handing Yoshinobu Yamamoto the largest contract for a pitcher in MLB history before he threw a pitch. This is the league.
But the Dodgers are only seventh in total payroll because Ohtani will turn over $68 million of his annual $70 million, meaning less than 1% of this year’s salary. Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Tyler Glasnow are currently the highest paid members.
Unsurprisingly, the Dodgers are World Series odds favorites with their star-studded roster.
30. Athletics
The Oakland Athletics finished last in the league in payroll for the second consecutive season.
That’s not entirely because of the team’s financial history, as the franchise prepares to move to Las Vegas in 2028. That story isn’t over, though.
