Baseball Injury Update:  Gerrit Cole and Juan Soto, Yankees

 

Cole (right elbow soreness) looked good after making his second rehab start with Double-A Somerset on Sunday, throwing 57 pitches (44 strikes) in 4 2/3 innings and touching 96 mph with his fastball.

 

Soto (left hand inflammation) returned to the lineup for Monday night’s series opener against the Royals in Kansas City.

Manny Machado, Padres

 

Machado (right hip flexor strain) returns to the lineup as the DH for Monday’s game against the A’s. The Padres have not set a timetable for his return to third base.

 

Baseball Injury Update: Elias Diaz and Brendan Rodgers, Rockies

 

Diaz left Monday night’s game against the Twins with left calf tightness.

 

Rodgers was placed on 10-day IL Sunday with a left hamstring strain. Manager Bud Black described the injury Monday as “mild” pregame.

 

Baseball Injury Update: Matt Chapman, Alex Cobb and Robbie Ray, Giants

 

Chapman (hamstring) was out of the starting lineup for the second straight game Monday. Manager Bob Melvin said the team expects Chapman to return Tuesday.

 

Cobb (left hip surgery) has resumed a throwing progression and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday at Oracle Park.

 

Baseball Injury Update: Ray (Tommy John surgery) will make his next ACL rehab assignment with the Giants on Thursday.

Corey Seager, Rangers

Seager (left hamstring tightness) was out of the lineup for the third straight day Sunday. Manager Bruce Bochy said he doesn’t expect an IL stint, but it could take a few days for Seager to return to the field.

Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker, Astros

Bregman left Sunday’s game against the Angels with left arm discomfort after being hit by a 93.4 mph sinker from Hunter Strickland in the sixth inning.

Tucker (right shin contusion) is expected to return to the Astros lineup as soon as he is eligible on Friday.

Trey Turner and Brandon Marsh, Phillies

Turner (left hamstring strain) is improving and could be back in the Phillies lineup by next week if all goes well.

Marsh (right hamstring strain) travels to join Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday to resume baseball activities. He will stay there for two days. After the Phillies return from a two-game London series against the Mets, they will determine whether Marsh will continue his recovery with the team at Double-A Reading or possibly Boston.

Nico Horner, Cubs

Imaging revealed that Horner suffered a small laceration to his right hand after being hit by a Hunter Green fastball during Thursday’s game in Cincinnati. Manager Craig Counsell noted that multiple doctors said Horner could likely play through the issue, but the Cubs are still weighing if a trip to the injured list is the right way forward.

 

Rafael Devers, Tyler O’Neal and Masataka Yoshida, Red Sox

Devers exited Saturday’s game against the White Sox in the eighth inning with a sore left knee and did not play Sunday.

O’Neal (right knee discomfort) was out of the starting lineup Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully he won’t be needed on the injured list again.

Yoshida (left thumb strain) began a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, going 1-for-4 as a DH. Manager Alex Cora has indicated that the hope is that Yoshida will be able to rejoin the Red Sox at some point this week, but likely not before Thursday.

 

Baseball Injury Update: Colt Keith, Kerry Carpenter and Jack Flaherty, Tigers

Keith (left knee discomfort) was injured in Saturday’s clash with Akil Baddu but suffered no structural damage. day by day

Carpenter (lumbar spine stress fracture) rehabbed at Comerica Park but is not close to resuming baseball activity.

Baseball Injury Update :Flaherty (low back tightness) is expected to make his next start in next weekend’s series against the Astros in Houston.

Austin Hayes and Kyle Stowers, Orioles

Hayes (rib injury/back strain) and Stowers (right wrist discomfort) were out of the lineup for Monday’s series finale vs. the Rays. Manager Brandon Hyde was optimistic that a pair of outfielders could come off the bench.
