Badminton Asia Championship 2024: Tough test for top singles players

The men’s singles draw has hurled up some interesting matchups. While top seeds usually have the easiest draws on paper, China’s Shi Yuki can’t thank her lucky stars.

Shi, the world number two, will face India’s world number 13 Laksh Sen in the first round, with a potential last-16 clash against world number 12 Nishimoto Kenta or world number 10 Loh Ken Yu, the 2021 world champion.

World No. 3 and second seed Anthony Ginting had an easy draw on paper, his first opponent being India’s No. 27 Kidambi Srikanth. But Kidambi is a former world number one in his own right and won’t be a walkover.

Ginting’s compatriot Jonathan Christie, seeded third, will face a much simpler match in theory, with one of the four qualifiers drawn for one game, while Malaysia’s Lee Ji Jia faces Indian prospect Priyanshu Rajawat.

Women’s top seed Ahn Seong of Korea Republic faces a thrilling clash with resurgent Okuhara Nozomi in the first round. Okuhara, a former world number one and 2016 Olympic bronze medallist, had an injury-plagued start to 2022 but has reached three finals, winning two, of his last eight World Tour events through the end of 2023.

Olympic champion Chen Yufei will fancy her possibility in the other half of the draw against world number 16 Supanida Kathethong of Thailand, while the third, fourth and fifth seeds – Tai Tzu-ying, Yamaguchi Akane and He Bingjiao respectively – will each face qualifiers.
