HS Prannoy will look to regain his lost form as he leads India’s challenge at the Australia Open badminton tournament from Tuesday. Prannoy, the fifth seed here, has not had the best results in the last two tournaments. He was stunned in the men’s singles first round of the Thailand Open last month by compatriot Meiraba Luwang Mysnam. If that wasn’t enough, world number 10 Prannoy lost 13-21 21-14 15-21 to world number 11 Kenta Nishimoto in a 45-minute Singapore Open round of 16 match and the Indian will be desperate to turn things around. Sameer Verma will play Indonesia’s Chiko Aura Di Wardoyo in the opening round, while Ravi will face a tough opponent in Singapore’s eighth seed Loh Ken Yu. Other Indians in the men’s singles are Mithun Manjunath, who will take on Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan, Kiran Geoge against Canada’s Xiaodong Tseng, S Shankar Muthusamy Subramanian who will be up against top seed Jonathan Christie of Indonesia.

 

In the women’s singles, eighth seed Akarshi Kashyap will lead the Indian charge. She will play Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova in the Inaugural round. Asmita Chaliha will play Peru’s Ines Lucia Castillo, Anupama Upadhyay will take on Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching, Samia Imad Farooqui will be up against top seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, while Keura Mopati and Malvika Bansod will feature in an all-India contest.

 

There is no Indian feature in the men’s doubles, while the Panda sisters, Rutuparna and Swetaparna, seeded seventh, and Harshita Raut and Shruti Swain will lead India’s charge in the women’s doubles. Eighth seeds B Sumit Reddy and Sikki Reddy will take on the Malaysian pair of Wang Tien See and Lim Chiu Hsien in their opener, while young Kona and Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli will take on another Malaysian combination of Hu Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin. The third Indian mixed doubles pair of Ayush Raj Gupta and Shruti Swain will take on the Australian pair of Jordan Young and Sydney Jonadi in the opener.(more news)
