Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma broke the record for most sixes by an Indian in an IPL season during the IPL 2024 clash against Punjab Kings in Hyderabad.

SRH batsman Abhishek Sharma broke Indian Premier League star India and RCB batsman Virat Kohli’s eight-year-old record as he hit the most sixes in a season in the tournament by an Indian player. The 23-year-old achieved the feat during his team’s clash against PBKS in the 69th match of IPL 2024 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

The southpaw surpassed Kohli’s feat with a maximum against Rishi Dhawan in the sixth over of the second innings at long-on. After losing his opening partner Travis Head on the very first ball of the innings, the Punjab-born cricketer took it upon himself to get his team off to a flying start and hit a half-century off just 21 balls. In the end he was dismissed for 66 off 28 balls with five fours and six sixes and left SRH at 129/3 after chasing a mammoth score of 215 in 10.1 overs.

During his innings, Abhishek also breached his all-time best of 426 runs in the 2022 edition. The SRH opener has now scored 467 runs in 13 innings at an average of 38.91 and a sensational strike rate of 209.41. Along with his 41 sixes, the southpaw also hit 35 fours and scored three half-centuries during the season.

In the ongoing season, Abhishek has formed an excellent opening partnership with Travis Head as the pair mercilessly destroyed the opposition bowling attack. Meanwhile, Kohli is closely following Abhishek to reclaim his feat of hitting 37 sixes in the ongoing season from 14 matches and RCB will be hard pressed to get ready to play in the eliminator game.

The RCB opener has been in great form this season with 708 runs in 14 innings at an average of 64.36 and 155 half-centuries at a strike rate of 155.60.
